Is that nearest point of relief , no closer to the flag ?

Hi Nik, When taking relief for unplayable ball, section 19 of the Royal & Ancient Rules of Golf comes into play. Quote
“A player takes relief for an unplayable ball and drops a ball under either the back-on-the-line relief option or lateral relief option.”
Under the rule, this means no closer to the flag and also incurs a one penalty shot. However, should the relief comply with the Par 3 local rules, then no penalty applies.

Hi Gents, is the diagram we are looking at above mis-labeled as it’s only a 1 club relief area ; the area within one club from the point of reference.
2 clubs as per our local rule would be the area within 2 full lengths from the point of reference?

My understanding of the rule is that you measure out two club lengths from the beginning of the relief area and that is the maximum allowed and the ball is then dropped in the arc as shown.

    Hi Mike,

I am looking for clarification on our local rule, relief from bare batches on the course. My understanding it was from fairways and greens only. I have observed relief being taken from areas in the rough, between the fairways. Can we please bring the correct understanding of this rule to everyones attention.

    Thanks Nik
